Flemish-speaking refers to people who use Flemish, the Dutch-language varieties spoken in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. Flemish is not a separate language from Dutch; it comprises regional dialects and forms of Dutch particular to Flanders, including West Flemish and East Flemish, alongside the standard Dutch used in formal settings. Culturally, Flemish-speaking communities maintain distinct traditions, literature, media, and institutions in Dutch. Language planning and the preservation of regional dialects coexist with the use of Standard Dutch in education, broadcasting, and government. Globally, there are diaspora communities with Flemish-speaking members in other countries, reflecting migration and cross-border cultural exchange within the Dutch-speaking world.
