Brakpan

Brakpan is a town in Gauteng province, South Africa. It is part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in the East Rand region, located about 25 kilometers east of central Johannesburg. The town forms part of the greater Johannesburg metropolitan area and is bordered by towns such as Benoni and Boksburg. Brakpan lies on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand, and its early development was driven by gold mining. The Brakpan Mine and associated processing works anchored the local economy in the first half of the 20th century. Since then, the local economy diversified into manufacturing, logistics, and services, while mining activity declined.

The population is diverse and urban in character, reflecting the broader demographics of the Gauteng region.

Ekurhuleni's administration oversees Brakpan as part of a metropolitan municipality that includes many suburbs and towns.
