Brailleiks

Brailleiks is a term used in discussions of tactile literacy to describe a conceptual class of devices and interfaces that integrate braille with dynamic, interactive feedback on a tactile surface. The aim is to support literacy, education, and navigation for people who are blind or have severe visual impairment by enabling more flexible presentation of information beyond traditional refreshable braille displays.

The concept envisions a surface made of reconfigurable tactile elements that can render standard braille characters and also encode spatial layouts, diagrams, or graphical information through layered haptics, miniature actuators, or soft mechanics. In some proposals, the device can switch between braille and 'ik' modes—the latter representing icons, maps, or kinesthetic cues—via touch gestures and audible feedback. Technologies such as flexible electronics, tactile rendering, and low-power actuation are typically assumed, with connectivity to smartphones or cloud services.

Brailleiks has appeared mainly in speculative design and early academic discussions as a way to imagine more versatile tactile interfaces.
