Brahmas

Brahmas are a breed of domestic chicken that originated in the United States. They are known for their large size and gentle disposition, making them a popular choice for backyard chicken keepers. Brahmas are one of the largest chicken breeds, with roosters typically weighing around 12 pounds and hens around 9.5 pounds. They have a feathered shank, meaning their legs are covered in downy feathers, which is a distinctive characteristic of the breed. Brahmas come in several color variations, including light, dark, and buff.

The Brahma breed was developed in the 1840s from a cross between Chittagong chickens from India and Grey Shanghai birds. They were initially bred for their meat production due to their substantial size. However, their docile nature and ability to lay eggs through the winter months have made them popular as dual-purpose birds. Brahmas are also known for being good mothers and are often used to hatch eggs from other breeds.

These chickens are very hardy and can tolerate cold weather well, thanks to their dense feathering. They are generally calm and easy to handle, which makes them suitable for families with children. Brahmas are not typically flighty and are content to remain within their enclosures. Their egg-laying capabilities are moderate, with hens laying about two to four large, brown eggs per week. Brahmas are a robust and manageable breed that offers both meat and egg production, along with a placid temperament.
