Bottomdense refers to a characteristic sometimes observed in sedimentary rocks where the lowest portion of a bed or stratum exhibits a higher concentration of fine-grained material, such as clay or silt, compared to the layers above it. This phenomenon is often associated with depositional processes in environments where settling velocities of particles are influenced by factors like waning current energy or changes in fluid density.

The formation of bottomdense layers can occur in various depositional settings, including river systems, marine environments, and lakes. In fluvial settings, for example, a sudden decrease in flow velocity might cause the finest particles to settle out first, forming a bottomdense layer at the base of a deposited sediment package. Similarly, in marine environments, changes in salinity or the presence of density currents can lead to the preferential settling of finer sediments at the bottom.

The presence of bottomdense layers can have implications for the engineering properties of a rock mass.
