Borstgebonden

Borstgebonden is a Dutch term formed from borst (chest) and gebonden (bound). It describes a garment or technique that binds the chest. In fashion history, borstgebonden garments—such as bodices or corsets designed to constrict the chest—were used to shape the torso and create a supported or elongated silhouette. The term functions as a descriptive label rather than a specific technical category, and in practice it is often replaced by more precise terms like korset, bodice, or corset.

In medical contexts, borstgebonden may describe bandages, binders, or compression garments applied around the chest to provide support after surgery, stabilize the thorax after injury, or manage certain medical conditions. In Dutch medical terminology, more specific terms such as borstverband or borstbandage are commonly used, but borstgebonden can be understood as a general descriptor for chest-binding.

In contemporary usage, chest binding for gender-affirming purposes is common in some communities and is usually referred to with terms such as borstbinding or borstbinder in Dutch contexts; borstgebonden is not the standard technical label but can be understood to describe a chest-binding garment or technique.
