borst

Borst is a Dutch noun meaning the front part of the body between the neck and the abdomen. In human anatomy it refers to the chest area (the thorax), including the sternum (borstbeen), the rib cage, and the pectoral muscles. In everyday language it can also denote the breasts. The term appears in medical contexts as well, for example in references to chest pain (pijn op de borst) or chest surgery.

In culinary and butchery contexts, borst denotes the meat from the chest of an animal. In poultry this is the chicken breast, commonly called borst. In beef and other animals the chest cut is described as borststuk or rundborst, depending on regional terminology.

In birds, the chest region houses the pectoral muscles that power flight; these muscles are especially well-developed in strong fliers.

The Dutch term also appears in several compound forms, such as borststuk (a chest cut of meat), borstkas (thorax) and borstbeen (sternum).
