Boreys

Boreys, also known as Borey Piam, is a type of traditional dwelling found in Cambodia. These distinctive houses are characterized by their raised structure, typically built on stilts or pillars. This elevated design serves multiple practical purposes, primarily to protect the living space from flooding during the rainy season, a common occurrence in many parts of Cambodia. The stilts also allow for air circulation beneath the house, helping to keep the interior cool in the tropical climate.

Boreys are usually constructed from natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and palm leaves. The architectural style often features a steep, pitched roof to facilitate rainwater runoff. The layout can vary, but commonly includes a main living area, bedrooms, and a kitchen. Verandahs or balconies are often incorporated, providing outdoor living space and a vantage point. The aesthetic of a Borey is generally simple and functional, reflecting the needs and resources of its inhabitants.

Historically, the Borey design has been passed down through generations, adapting to local conditions and available materials. While modern housing materials and construction methods are becoming more prevalent, the Borey remains an important cultural symbol and a testament to traditional Cambodian ingenuity in adapting to the environment.
