Borats are fictional characters created and portrayed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. The central figure is Borat Sagdiyev, a Kazakh journalist whose supposed travels in the United States and other countries provide the framework for satirical social commentary.

Origin and media appearances

The character first appeared on the television program Da Ali G Show (2000–2004) as part of Cohen’s broader cross-cultural satire. Borat gained international prominence with the 2006 film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, which used faux documentary style and real-world interactions to critique stereotypes, culture, and politics. A sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, was released in 2020, again starring Cohen as Borat, with the narrative focusing on Borat’s travels to the United States accompanied by his daughter, Tutar Sagdiyev (portrayed by Maria Bakalova).
