Bokator

Bokator is a Cambodian martial art rooted in the traditions of the Khmer Empire and long-standing village and royal combat training. It combines close-quarters fighting with ritualized movement and performance, reflecting both practical self-defense and cultural expression. The practice centers on a large repertoire of movements drawn from animals and mythological figures, collectively known as kbach. Techniques include strikes with fists, elbows, knees, and feet; blocks and parries; clinching, throws, and joint-locks. Movements are taught as solo forms and in partner work, and their application is trained through controlled drills and sparring.

Training typically begins with conditioning and a ceremonial or spiritual warm-up, followed by study of kbach and their practical application in sequences. Demonstrations and sparring formats vary, but sessions commonly emphasize discipline, posture, timing, and respect for teachers and fellow practitioners.

Historically, bokator traces its roots to ancient Cambodian military and ceremonial dances, surviving through centuries despite periods of suppression. In the late 20th century, the art was nearly erased by upheaval, but revival efforts led by Cambodian instructors and communities restored schools and spread interest internationally. Modern bokator programs operate in Cambodia and abroad, supported by national associations and volunteer educators, often blending traditional forms with contemporary demonstrations and cultural programs.

As a symbol of Cambodian cultural heritage, bokator appears in community ceremonies and performances, conveying historical memory, discipline, and national identity. Its emphasis on balance, control, and respect aligns with broader martial arts and performing-arts traditions in the region.
