Bogotás

Bogotás is the Hungarian form used to refer to Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. Bogotá is located on the eastern edge of the Colombian Andes, in a highland basin at about 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level. The city is the political, administrative, and economic center of the country and serves as the seat of national government and many major institutions.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Muysccubun-speaking Muisca people before the Spanish founded the city in 1538 as Santa Fé de Bogotá. The name Bogotá ultimately derives from the Muysccubun words for a local settlement, Bacatá. Over the centuries, the city grew into a major metropolitan area with a mix of colonial streets, modern districts, and expansive public spaces.

Bogotá encompasses a dense urban core and numerous districts, including the historic La Candelaria neighborhood, known for its colonial architecture and museums. Notable cultural sites include the Gold Museum (Museo del Oro), the Botero Museum, and Monserrate, a hill offering views over the city. The city is a key cultural hub with universities, theaters, galleries, and a vibrant street-art scene.

Transportation in Bogotá includes El Dorado International Airport, the city’s main international gateway, and an extensive TransMilenio bus rapid transit system. The metropolitan area also relies on buses, cycling lanes, and ongoing infrastructure projects to expand rail transit.

Bogotá experiences a cool, temperate climate with relatively small seasonal temperature variation; average daily temperatures are mild year-round, and rainfall occurs throughout the year with wetter periods.
