Bloklagre

Bloklagre is a data storage approach where data is stored in fixed-size blocks. Each block is addressed independently, and blocks can be read or written without regard to the surrounding data. This contrasts with file storage, which presents files through a hierarchical file system, and with object storage, which stores data as discrete objects with metadata. In bloklagre, the file system or database layer typically manages how blocks are assembled into files or data structures.

Implementation typically involves presenting raw block devices to a host, often over a storage area network or network protocols such as iSCSI. The host’s operating system then uses a file system or database to organize the blocks into files, directories, and other structures. In cloud and virtualization environments, bloklagre is exposed as persistent disk volumes that can be attached to virtual machines or containers. These volumes can be managed independently of the host and may support features such as snapshots and replication.

Key features commonly associated with bloklagre include the ability to perform fine-grained I/O, support for high input/output operations per second (IOPS), and compatibility with a variety of file systems and databases. Storage management techniques such as RAID, thin provisioning, and snapshots are frequently used to improve performance, reliability, and flexibility.

Advantages of bloklagre include low latency and high IOPS for random access workloads, precise control over storage allocation, and strong suitability for databases and virtualization. Limitations include the need for an additional file system layer to provide structure for files, increased management complexity, and potential inefficiency for small files if block size is not well chosen.
