Blindschroeven

Blindschroeven are a category of fasteners designed to create a threaded hole in a workpiece from one side only. They are used when access to the far side is limited, or when a flush outer surface is required. The most common forms are rivet nuts (nutserts) and threaded inserts. A rivet nut is a hollow sleeve with internal threads that is inserted into a predrilled hole and expanded from the outside to form a secure, threaded bore. A threaded insert provides a durable internal thread in a hole and is installed by pressing, screwing, or snapping into place, depending on the design and material.

Installation typically requires a specialized tool. Rivet-nut tools deform the outer shell to lock the nut in place, while inserts may require a press, a tapping operation, or a simple insertion followed by securing with an adhesive or interference fit. Materials for blindschroeven include steel (often zinc-plated or galvanized for corrosion resistance), stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and, for certain applications, high-strength polymers.

Applications span metal and composite assemblies in industries such as automotive, electronics enclosures, furniture, cabinetry, and machinery housings. They provide a strong, reusable thread without accessing the opposite side of the joint, enabling easier disassembly and maintenance. Important considerations when selecting blindschroeven include material compatibility, thread size, housing thickness, load type (shear vs. tensile), environmental exposure, and the availability of appropriate installation tools.
