Blickwechsel

Blickwechsel (literally "change of view") is a German noun that denotes a shift in perspective, focalization, or point of observation. The term combines Blick (glance, view) and Wechsel (change) and is used across German-language discourse to describe a reorientation in how a subject is perceived or discussed. In practice, a Blickwechsel can involve switching the observer, the narrator, or the focal character, as well as changing from one scene to another or from description to analysis.

In literature and narrative theory, a Blickwechsel refers to moving the lens from one character’s viewpoint to another, or alternately presenting different segments of a story to reveal contrasting motives, insights, or biases. In film, theater, and the visual arts, the concept is closely related to editing, camera work, or staging that shifts attention—such as cuts between perspectives, cross-cutting, or viewpoint shots—so as to guide the audience’s understanding and emotional engagement.

In journalism and non-fiction, Blickwechsel can describe the inclusion of multiple perspectives, geographic vantage points, or frames of reference within a single piece, enriching context and challenging a single narrative. In psychology or therapy contexts, the term is often used metaphorically to describe reframing a situation—encouraging a client to adopt a different interpretation or stance toward a problem to change emotional responses.

Blickwechsel is similar in intent to the more formal term Perspektivwechsel, though it often carries a stronger emphasis on perception and visual noticing rather than purely conceptual shifts.
