Bleigiessen
Bleigiessen is a traditional fortune-telling custom practiced on New Year’s Eve in German-speaking countries and parts of Central Europe. The name means “lead pouring”; historically it involved melting small quantities of lead or a lead substitute and dropping the liquid metal into cold water to form a solid shape. Participants then interpret the resulting figure as a prediction for the coming year. The practice is typically performed as a family activity, often with humor and social interaction.
The process involves heating a small piece of metal (traditionally lead, though tin is now commonly used)
Origins of Bleigiessen trace back to the 19th century in German-speaking areas as a form of divination.
Safety and modern practice: Lead exposure is hazardous, so many health authorities discourage using real lead
