Blasenwanddilatation

Blasenwanddilatation refers to the widening or stretching of the bladder wall. This condition can occur for a variety of reasons, often related to the bladder's inability to empty properly or prolonged overdistension.

One common cause is chronic urinary retention, where urine accumulates in the bladder over time due to obstructions like an enlarged prostate or urethral strictures, or due to neurological issues affecting bladder function. The constant pressure from retained urine can lead to a gradual thinning and stretching of the bladder wall.

Another factor can be the long-term use of indwelling catheters or intermittent self-catheterization, which may, in some individuals, contribute to a less efficient bladder contraction and subsequent overfilling.

Symptoms of blasenwanddilatation can be varied and may include a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, frequent urination, urgency, and sometimes overflow incontinence. In severe cases, the weakened bladder wall may be more susceptible to infections.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, urine tests, and imaging studies such as ultrasound or cystography to assess bladder capacity and wall thickness. Urodynamic studies can also provide valuable information about bladder function.

Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause of the bladder distension and improving bladder emptying. This might involve medications, surgical intervention to relieve obstructions, or adjustments to catheterization schedules. Rehabilitation of bladder function through timed voiding or pelvic floor exercises may also be part of the management plan.
