BlanketZylinder

Blanketzylinder (blanket cylinder) is a central element of offset lithography presses. It is a cylinder wrapped with a durable rubber blanket that receives the image from the plate cylinder and transfers it to the printing substrate, typically paper, with the impression cylinder providing pressure.

The blanket is a flexible, elastic layer typically made of synthetic rubber with fabric reinforcement. It is mounted on the cylinder with controlled tension and may be enclosed in a blanket sleeve or clamped in segments to allow rapid blanket changes. The surface may include cushion layers to improve ink transfer and to hold fine plate details.

In operation, ink is applied to the image area on the plate cylinder; the plate transfers the image to the blanket cylinder, a process known as offsetting. The blanket then prints the image onto the substrate on the impression cylinder under pressure. For multi-color prints, the blanket cylinder is used at each color station with precise registration.

Maintenance and performance: Blankets wear with use and must be replaced periodically. They are cleaned with blanket wash and inspected for wear, nicks, or glazing. Proper mounting and tension are essential to avoid slippage, ghosting, or misregistration.

History and uses: The blanket cylinder is a defining element of offset printing, enabling high-speed mass production of magazines, catalogs, and packaging by separating ink transfer from direct contact between the plate and substrate. The concept originated in the early 20th century and remains a standard feature of most offset presses.
