Blandningshöjden, a Swedish term, translates directly to "mixing height" in English. It refers to the depth of the atmosphere from the Earth's surface up to the level where vertical mixing of air pollutants and other substances ceases. This height is crucial in atmospheric science and air quality management.

The mixing height is not a fixed value but varies significantly with time of day, season, and geographical location. It is influenced by factors such as solar radiation, wind, and atmospheric stability. During the day, solar heating of the Earth's surface leads to convection and turbulent motion, which mixes the air to greater depths, resulting in a higher mixing height. Conversely, at night, the surface cools, and atmospheric stability increases, leading to a lower mixing height.

A higher mixing height generally allows for better dispersion of pollutants, as they are mixed into a larger volume of air. This can lead to lower surface concentrations of pollutants. Conversely, a low mixing height can trap pollutants near the ground, leading to elevated concentrations and potentially poor air quality, especially in urban or industrial areas.
