BitewingAufnahmen, also known as bitewing radiographs, are a specific type of dental X-ray used to examine the interproximal surfaces of teeth. These surfaces are the areas between teeth, which are often difficult to visualize directly with standard dental mirrors. The bitewing X-ray gets its name from the small tab or "wing" that the patient bites down on, which holds the film or digital sensor in place.

The procedure involves placing a small piece of X-ray film or a digital sensor between the upper and lower teeth. The patient is instructed to gently close their mouth on the bitewing tab. The X-ray beam is then directed from the side, perpendicular to the film, capturing images of the crowns of both the upper and lower teeth in a single exposure. This allows dentists to see the contact points and the areas just below the gum line.

BitewingAufnahmen are primarily used to detect interproximal cavities, also known as cavities between teeth. They are also valuable for monitoring the health of the bone supporting the teeth, assessing the fit of restorations like fillings and crowns, and identifying early signs of periodontal disease. They are a routine part of many dental check-ups, especially for patients at risk of developing cavities. The diagnostic information provided by bitewing radiographs is crucial for early intervention and maintaining oral health.
