Biofoulingu

Biofoulingu is a term used in marine science and engineering to describe the accumulation of living organisms on submerged surfaces. It is closely related to biofouling and is often treated as a variant spelling or regional usage. The phenomenon encompasses both microfouling, involving microorganisms such as bacteria and diatoms, and macrofouling, involving larger organisms such as barnacles, mussels, tubeworms, and juvenile crustaceans.

The process typically begins with a conditioning film of organic molecules on a surface, followed by microbial colonization and biofilm formation. Settlement and growth of larger fouling organisms then occur, leading to complex communities that can mature into dense fouling assemblies. Environmental conditions such as salinity, temperature, flow, and nutrient availability strongly influence fouling development and species composition.

Common surfaces affected include ship hulls, offshore platforms, pipelines, aquaculture nets, and membranes used in desalination and water-treatment facilities. Consequences are often economic and operational, including increased hydrodynamic drag and fuel consumption, accelerated corrosion, greater maintenance costs, and potential clogging or reduced efficiency in piping and filtration systems. Ecological risks include the unintentional transport of non-native species to new regions.

Prevention and control strategies focus on antifouling coatings (biocidal and non-toxic fouling-release), surface engineering to deter settlement, regular cleaning, and flow management. In recent decades, regulatory frameworks have aimed to reduce environmental impacts of coatings and biocides, promoting safer, more sustainable technologies.
