Bioconversions

Bioconversion refers to the transformation of one chemical compound into another using biological agents, most commonly microorganisms or enzymes. This process harnesses the metabolic capabilities of living organisms or their isolated components to carry out specific chemical reactions. Bioconversions are employed in a wide range of applications, including the production of pharmaceuticals, food additives, biofuels, and various industrial chemicals.

The key to bioconversion lies in the specificity and efficiency of biological catalysts. Enzymes, often embedded within microbial cells, can catalyze reactions under mild conditions, such as moderate temperatures and pressures, and in aqueous environments. This contrasts with many traditional chemical synthesis methods that often require harsh conditions and can produce undesirable byproducts. Microorganisms, such as bacteria, yeast, and fungi, can be engineered or selected for their ability to perform desired bioconversions.
