Bioceramiche

Bioceramiche refers to ceramic materials that are biocompatible, meaning they can be used in medical and dental applications without causing an adverse reaction in the body. These materials are chosen for their inertness, strength, and ability to integrate with living tissues. Common bioceramics include alumina, zirconia, hydroxyapatite, and bioactive glasses.

Alumina (aluminum oxide) is a highly pure and strong ceramic, often used for load-bearing implants like hip and knee replacements due to its wear resistance and biocompatibility. Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is another exceptionally strong and fracture-resistant ceramic, popular for dental crowns and bridges as well as for hip joint components.

Hydroxyapatite is a ceramic that closely resembles the mineral component of bone and teeth. It is frequently used as a coating on metal implants to promote osseointegration, the process by which bone grows onto the implant surface, thus improving implant stability. Bioactive glasses are a unique class of bioceramics that not only integrate with bone but also actively stimulate bone regeneration through chemical reactions with surrounding tissues.
