Biljets

Biljets is a term used in several European language traditions to denote a ticket or pass that grants access to transportation, events, or services. A biljet records entitlement such as date, time, origin, destination, and price.

Biljets derives from the word billet, from French, meaning a note, document, or permit. Cognates appear across European languages, including billet, biljett or biljet with various spellings and plural forms.

Formats range from paper tickets printed on demand to digital representations stored on smartphones or smart cards. Modern biljets use QR codes, barcodes, contactless RFID, or secure tokens. Some systems allow transfer or resale within defined rules.

In transport and events, a biljet serves as proof of payment and determines eligibility to board or participate. They can be single-use, multi-ride, or time-based passes, with rules on expiry, revalidation, or inspection.

Digital ticketing has improved interoperability, real-time updates, and data collection for operators, while raising concerns about privacy and access to technology. Wallet-based passes and integrated platforms enable seamless multimodal travel and event access.
