Bildesampling, a term derived from the German word "Bild" meaning image, refers to the process of selecting a subset of pixels or discrete values from an image for analysis, processing, or compression. The technique is fundamental in fields such as computer graphics, remote sensing, medical imaging, and machine learning, as it enables efficient handling of large image datasets while preserving essential visual or informational content.

Historically, bildesampling evolved alongside digital imaging hardware, originating in early raster graphics as a means to reduce memory footprints. With the rise of geographic information systems and satellite imagery, systematic sampling strategies were developed to capture representative statistics from high‑resolution spatial data. In recent years, bildesampling has become integral to training convolutional neural networks, where images are often resized or cropped to standardized dimensions through interpolation methods such as bilinear or bicubic.
