Bihzad

Bihzad, also transcribed Beḥzād or Behdzād, was a Persian painter and master miniaturist of the late Timurid and early Safavid periods (approximately 1450–ca. 1535). The precise details of his birthplace remain uncertain, but his career is closely tied to the Timurid court at Herat, where he emerged as the leading figure of the Herat school.

Life and work: Bihzad worked at the court of Husayn Bayqara in Herat during the late 15th century, producing numerous illustrated manuscripts. After Herat fell to the Uzbeks, he is believed to have spent his later years at the Safavid court, influencing subsequent generations of Persian painters. He is commonly dated to have died around 1535, in or near Herat.

Style and contributions: His paintings are celebrated for refined line, poised figures, and a naturalistic yet poetic treatment of space. He favored elegant profiles and three-quarter views, precise draughtsmanship, and delicate color washes that give depth to landscapes and architectural settings. His compositions balance narrative clarity with sophisticated design, often integrating courtly life, poetry, and nature into cohesive scenes. His work helped shape the mature Persian miniature idiom and set standards later painters sought to imitate.

Legacy: Bihzad's workshop produced numerous manuscripts regarded as among the high points of Persian painting. His influence extended through the Safavid era, shaping the approach of later masters and contributing to the enduring prestige of Persian miniature painting in Iran and beyond.
