Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar is the capital and largest city of Odisha, a state on the eastern coast of India. Located in the Khordha district, the city lies in the delta region of the Mahanadi and serves as the administrative and economic center of the state. The name Bhubaneswar, from Sanskrit, means “the lord of the universe” and is associated with the Hindu deity Shiva.

The city is renowned for its temples, earning the nickname Temple City of India. It contains a temple belt dating from the 6th to the 13th centuries, showcasing the traditional Kalinga architectural style. Notable temples include Lingaraj, Parsurameswara, Mukteshvara, Rajarani, and Brahmeswara, which attract visitors and scholars.

Bhubaneswar was developed as a planned city in the mid-20th century and became the capital of Odisha after independence in 1947–48. The modern sectors are laid out in a systematic design that complements its historic temple precincts.

The city is a growing educational and IT hub with institutions such as IIT Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, NISER, KIIT University, and Utkal University. It is served by Biju Patnaik International Airport and Bhubaneswar Junction railway station, and hosts tech parks such as Infocity.

Bhubaneswar has a tropical climate with hot summers, a monsoon season, and mild winters. The economy blends administrative functions with education, research, and services, supported by ongoing urban planning and infrastructure development.
