Bewegungsabnormitäten, also known as movement disorders, represent a group of neurological conditions characterized by abnormal, involuntary, or impaired movements. These can affect the speed, fluidity, coordination, or quality of voluntary motor actions. The underlying causes are diverse and can range from genetic predispositions and neurodegenerative diseases to brain injuries, infections, or metabolic imbalances.

Symptoms of movement abnormalities vary widely depending on the specific disorder. They can include tremors, which are rhythmic shaking movements, often in the hands or limbs. Dystonia involves sustained or intermittent muscle contractions that cause twisting and repetitive abnormal postures. Chorea is characterized by rapid, jerky, and involuntary movements, often described as dance-like. Athetosis refers to slow, writhing, and involuntary movements, typically affecting the limbs. Other manifestations can include tics, which are sudden, brief, repetitive, nonrhythmic motor movements or vocalizations, and myoclonus, which are sudden, shock-like jerks of a limb or part of the body. Impairments in gait, balance, and posture are also common.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough neurological examination, a detailed medical history, and sometimes neuroimaging techniques like MRI or CT scans, as well as blood tests to rule out metabolic causes. Treatment approaches are tailored to the specific movement disorder and may include medications to manage symptoms, physical or occupational therapy to improve function and coordination, and in some cases, deep brain stimulation or other surgical interventions. The prognosis and management strategies depend heavily on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition.
