Betygsskalor, or grading scales, are systems used to evaluate and communicate the performance, quality, or achievement of students, employees, or other individuals in various contexts. These scales provide a standardized way to assign numerical or letter-based grades that reflect different levels of proficiency or success.

In Swedish education, betygsskalor are commonly used to assess students’ performance in schools and universities. The most widely recognized grading scale in Swedish compulsory and upper secondary education is the five-grade scale, which includes A, B, C, D, E, and F. Here, A represents the highest achievement, followed by B, C, and D, while E indicates passing but below average, and F signifies failure. This scale is used to evaluate subjects such as mathematics, Swedish, and foreign languages, among others.

In higher education, particularly at universities, a slightly different scale is often employed. The seven-grade scale ranges from A to F, where A is the highest grade, followed by B, C, D, E, and F, with F indicating failure. Some institutions may also use additional grades like U (underkänd), which means fail, or G (godkänd), which means pass, particularly in certain European contexts. The seven-grade scale is designed to offer more nuanced distinctions between levels of achievement.

Betygsskalor are not limited to education; they are also used in professional settings to assess performance, such as in employee evaluations or certification programs. In these contexts, scales may vary widely depending on the organization’s policies and objectives.
