Bestimmender

As an adjective, bestimmend is the present participle of bestimmen used to describe something that determines, defines, or specifies. As a noun, Bestimmender (capitalized) or das Bestimmende can occur in specialized or technical prose to denote a determinant or determining factor. In such use, it stands in for the element that establishes reference, outcome, or interpretation within a model or argument. For example, Der Bestimmende Faktor in der Studie war die Variable X would mean “the determining factor in the study was variable X.” This nominal usage is relatively rare and tends to appear in mathematical, statistical, or formal linguistic discussions.
