Bendaggio

Bendaggio is the Italian term for bandaging, the practice of applying a fabric or other flexible material to cover and protect a body part. In medical use, bandages serve to protect wounds, secure dressings, immobilize injuries, and control bleeding or swelling. They can also provide support to joints and muscles and help maintain the position of a limb after an injury or surgery. Bandages are used in first aid, clinical care, and home settings, and come in a variety of forms suited to different purposes.

Common types include non-elastic bandages such as gauze rolls and crepe bandages used to secure dressings and provide light support; elastic or short- and long-stretch bandages that supply compression to reduce edema and improve venous return; cohesive or self-adherent bandages that stick to themselves but not to skin or hair; tubular bandages that form a sleeve over fingers, toes, or limbs; and triangular bandages that can create slings or improvised immobilization. Rigid bandages and splints are used to immobilize fractures or provide solid support in combination with padding.

Application generally involves preparing the area, applying a dressing if needed, and wrapping the bandage with appropriate tension so as not to impair circulation. Ends are secured with pins, tape, or clips, and the distal circulation should be checked after application. Bendaggio practice varies by setting but aims to protect, stabilize, and promote healing while preventing further injury.
