Belitung

Belitung, commonly known as Belitung Island, is an Indonesian island in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, located off the eastern coast of Sumatra in the Java Sea. The provincial capital is Tanjung Pandan. The island is noted for its white-sand beaches, clear waters, and striking granite rock formations that line many shorelines.

Geographically, Belitung sits in the Java Sea as part of the Bangka Belitung archipelago. It features a low-lying coast, tropical forests inland, and a coastline marked by large granite boulders. Popular natural landmarks include Tanjung Tinggi Beach with its giant granite blocks and Lengkuas Island, home to a historic lighthouse visible from the mainland.

Historically, Belitung has been part of regional maritime networks since the Srivijaya era and later experienced Dutch colonial influence. In 2002, it became part of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, formed to administer Belitung together with nearby Bangka Island. The island has a tradition of mining, fishing, and agriculture, with tin mining playing a significant historical role.

Economy and culture on Belitung have shifted toward tourism and services, though fishing and agriculture remain important. The population comprises Malay, Chinese, and other groups, with Belitung Malay as a local dialect. Belitung cuisine features dishes such as Mie Belitung, a noodle specialty. The island gained wider recognition through literature and film that portray local life and landscapes.

Notable attractions include Tanjung Tinggi Beach, known for its large granite boulders, and Lengkuas Island with its 19th-century lighthouse. Belitung’s coastal scenery and calm seas make it a popular destination for visitors seeking beaches, snorkeling, and island-hopping experiences.
