Beetakarotenia

Beetakarotenia, also known as beta-caroteneemia, is a benign medical condition characterized by the accumulation of excessive beta-carotene in the body’s tissues, leading to a yellow-orange discoloration of the skin. Unlike carotenemia, which is typically harmless, beetakarotenia is specifically associated with high dietary intake of beta-carotene, the precursor to vitamin A found in foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens.

The condition arises when the body absorbs more beta-carotene than it can metabolize or excrete. This excess accumulates in the skin’s fatty tissues, particularly in areas with thicker skin such as the palms and soles, giving them a yellow-orange hue. Unlike jaundice, which also causes skin discoloration, beetakarotenia does not affect the whites of the eyes (sclera) and is not associated with liver dysfunction.

Beetakarotenia is generally asymptomatic and poses no serious health risks. However, it may be mistaken for jaundice or other skin conditions, prompting unnecessary medical investigations. Diagnosis is typically confirmed through a review of dietary habits and physical examination, as blood tests for beta-carotene levels are not routinely performed. The condition resolves spontaneously once the excessive intake of beta-carotene-rich foods is reduced.

While beetakarotenia is harmless, excessive beta-carotene supplementation has been linked to potential health risks, including an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers and interactions with certain medications. Therefore, it is advisable to obtain beta-carotene primarily from dietary sources rather than supplements unless medically supervised.
