Batáis

Batáis refers to a specific type of traditional Japanese footwear. These wooden clogs are characterized by their elevated soles, typically supported by one or two "teeth" or blocks of wood on the underside. The purpose of these raised soles is to keep the wearer's feet above water, mud, and debris, making them practical for wet or uneven terrain. Batáis are often worn with traditional Japanese garments like kimonos and yukatas, particularly during festivals and formal occasions.

The construction of batáis involves a wooden base, often made from paulownia wood, and a fabric thong, called a hana'o, that passes through holes in the base and over the top of the foot, securing the clog to the wearer. The height and number of teeth can vary, influencing the wearer's posture and stride. While historically used for practical purposes, batáis have evolved into a fashion statement and are still a common sight in Japan, especially during warmer months and at summer festivals. Their distinctive design and cultural significance make them an iconic element of Japanese heritage.
