BatchSteuerung, also known as batch control, is a method of process automation used in industries where products are made in discrete quantities or batches. Unlike continuous processes, which operate without interruption, batch processes involve a sequence of steps performed on a specific amount of material. This material, the "batch," progresses through a series of operations, such as mixing, heating, cooling, or reacting, before the finished product is removed.

The primary goal of batch control is to manage these sequential operations reliably and reproducibly. This involves coordinating the timing and execution of various unit operations, ensuring that critical parameters like temperature, pressure, and flow rate are maintained within specified limits for each step. Batch control systems are designed to handle the inherent variability of batch production, where factors such as ingredient variations or equipment performance can influence the outcome.

Key components of a batch control system typically include recipe management, which defines the sequence of operations and parameters for a specific product; batch execution, which carries out the recipe; and batch reporting, which records all relevant data for traceability and quality assurance. The ISA-88 standard, formally known as IEC 61512, provides a widely adopted model for batch control, offering a common terminology and structure that facilitates the design and implementation of these systems. Batch control is crucial in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and specialty chemicals, where product quality and regulatory compliance are paramount.
