Basmåltid

Basmåltid is a term used in Scandinavian nutrition discourse to refer to the main meal of the day. It is the meal that provides the largest share of daily energy intake and nutrients, and it is typically more substantial than later snacks or smaller meals. The exact timing varies by culture and household, with many people counting lunch or dinner as the basmåltid. In traditional Nordic routines, basmåltidet is often a structured meal that brings family together.

A balanced basmåltid generally includes a protein source (such as fish, lean meat, eggs, legumes), vegetables or fruit, a source of complex carbohydrates (for example whole grains, potatoes, or rye bread), and some fats (olive oil, butter, or fatty fish). Dairy products may accompany the meal. Hydration is also considered part of the basmåltid context.

In nutrition guidelines, basmåltidet is emphasized as the anchor feeding pattern; it should be varied and adapted to individual energy needs and cultural preferences. It is normally accompanied by lighter meals or snacks to meet daily energy while maintaining appetite control and satiety.

Variations exist between countries and households, with some traditions placing the basmåltid at lunch and others at dinner. The concept contrasts with småmåltider, which are smaller meals or snacks distributed between main meals.
