Basisgedachte

Basisgedachte is a Dutch term that refers to the fundamental idea or core concept underlying a theory, method, argument, or project. It denotes the starting point, guiding principle, or central claim that shapes how something is understood, developed, or evaluated. The basisgedachte provides coherence by linking goals, assumptions, and actions to a common aim.

Etymology and usage: the word combines basis, meaning foundation, with gedachte, meaning thought. In Dutch, basisgedachte is commonly used in education, philosophy, research, and design to summarize the essential idea that governs a discussion or plan. It is closely related to, but sometimes distinguished from, terms like kernidee (core idea) or hoofdgedachte (main idea).

How to identify the basisgedachte: look for the central claim or purpose that recurs throughout the text or proposal; identify the primary assumption linking elements together; extract the overarching goal or problem the discussion seeks to address. The basisgedachte often answers questions like “What is this about at its core?” and “Why is this approach chosen?”
