Basenpaarveränderungen

Basenpaarveränderungen, often referred to as base pair alterations or base substitutions, are changes in the DNA sequence where one nucleotide base is replaced by another. DNA is composed of four nitrogenous bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). These bases pair specifically: A with T, and G with C. A base pair alteration occurs when this pairing is disrupted, for example, if an A is replaced by a G in one strand, leading to a change in its complementary partner.

These alterations can arise spontaneously during DNA replication or be induced by environmental factors such as radiation or certain chemicals. The consequences of a base pair alteration depend on its location within the genome and the specific change. Some alterations may have no noticeable effect, especially if they occur in non-coding regions of DNA or if the substituted amino acid has similar properties to the original one (a silent mutation). However, others can lead to significant changes in protein function, potentially causing genetic disorders or diseases like cancer.
