The proposed structure often involves sheets of tetrahedrally coordinated silicon or silicon-oxygen units linked to sheets of octahedrally coordinated metal cations, producing a planar or near-planar motif. Hypothetical properties typically include basal cleavage, a low to moderate hardness range, and a density consistent with other light-layered silicates.
