Barrieremidler, or barrier methods, are physical or chemical means that prevent fertilization or the transmission of infections during sexual activity. They are used for contraception and, in particular, to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Barrier methods are typically applied or worn at the time of intercourse and include products designed for vaginal sex as well as forms used during oral sex.

Common types include male condoms (made of latex, polyurethane, or polyisoprene), which are worn over the penis and can provide protection against many STIs when used correctly. Female condoms, inserted into the vagina, offer an alternative for those who cannot or do not wish to use male condoms. Diaphragms and cervical caps are inserted into the vagina to cover the cervix and are typically used with spermicide. Dental dams are thin sheets placed over the vulva or used during oral sex to reduce STI risk. Some barrier methods are used with spermicides for additional contraception, though spermicides alone do not protect against STIs.

Effectiveness depends on correct and consistent use. Barrier methods vary in pregnancy prevention efficacy, and protection against STIs is highest with condoms. Not all barrier methods offer comprehensive STI protection; condoms cover a broader range of infections. Latex allergies or sensitivities can be a concern, but non-latex options are available.

Availability and safety: barrier methods are widely available without prescription in many countries and are regulated as consumer health devices or medical devices. Users should follow instructions, store products properly, and be aware of compatibility with lubricants (oil-based lubricants can degrade latex). Regularly check expiration dates and replace worn items as needed.
