Barkflisor

Barkflisor, also known as bark lice or barkflies, are a small order of insects belonging to the order Psocoptera. They are typically found in humid environments, often inhabiting tree bark, leaf litter, and decaying wood. Their common name "bark lice" is somewhat misleading as they are not true lice, which are parasitic insects.

These insects are generally small, with many species measuring only a few millimeters in length. They possess long, slender antennae and a pair of compound eyes. Their wings, if present, are often membranous and held roof-like over their body when at rest. Barkflisor are detritivores, feeding on algae, fungi, lichens, and other organic matter found on surfaces. They play a role in decomposition and nutrient cycling within their ecosystems.

Barkflisor are a diverse group, with thousands of described species worldwide. They can be found in various habitats, from tropical rainforests to temperate forests. While most species are free-living, a few have adapted to living in association with humans, sometimes found in houses and museums where they can feed on stored food products or books. They are not considered pests in the same way as some other insects, and their impact on human structures is usually minimal.
