Barhi

Barhi, also spelled Barhee in some regions, is a cultivar of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). It is highly regarded for its soft, creamy flesh, delicate sweetness, and its status as one of the earliest date varieties to be harvested. In many markets, Barhi dates are sold fresh at the khalal stage, when the fruit is crisp, light-colored, and pale amber.

Originating in the Mesopotamian region, Barhi has since been cultivated across hot, arid climates. It is grown widely in the Middle East and South Asia, including countries such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, and India. The cultivar has also been extended to other date-growing regions with suitable irrigation and climate conditions, including North Africa and parts of North America.

Fruit characteristics vary with harvest stage. Barhi dates are typically small to medium in size, oblong to rounded, and range from pale yellow to amber as they mature. The fresh fruit is praised for a syrupy, honeyed sweetness and a creamy texture, often described as one of the juicier date experiences. If left to fully ripen, Barhi dates become softer and more intensely sweet, and they can be dried for longer storage.

Uses and handling. Barhi is commonly consumed fresh, but it can also be dried or used in desserts and confections. When fresh, they have a shorter shelf life and are best kept refrigerated. The cultivar is an important part of date markets in its growing regions and contributes to diversified date offerings worldwide.
