Bannau

Bannau is a Welsh term that translates roughly to “peaks” or “summits.” In Welsh toponymy, it is used to denote prominent mountains or mountain ranges and figures prominently in the Welsh-language naming of landscape features.

The most widely known use of the word is in the Welsh-language name Bannau Brycheiniog, the designation for the area internationally known as Brecon Beacons National Park. The park is located in south-central Wales and encompasses parts of several counties, including the historic Brycheiniog (Brecknock) region. The central Brecon Beacons range includes well-known summits such as Pen y Fan (the highest point at 886 meters), Cribyn, and Corn Du. The landscape features upland moorland, heath, and mixed woodlands, with geology that includes Old Red Sandstone and limestone formations.

The Bannau Brycheiniog landscape supports diverse habitats, wildlife, and scenic value, making it a popular destination for hiking, climbing, cave exploration, and other outdoor activities. In addition, the region is recognized for its dark skies and was designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve, highlighting its importance for astronomy and nighttime conservation.

Linguistically, Bannau Brycheiniog reflects Welsh language heritage and is used alongside the English name for the national park. The word Bannau itself appears in other Welsh mountain names as well, signifying a cluster of notable summits within a landscape.
