Banderoles

Banderoles are decorative or symbolic streamers or ribbons, often bearing inscriptions or emblems. Historically, they have served various purposes, from military identification to religious symbolism. In a military context, banderoles were frequently attached to lances or banners, displaying the colors or insignia of a knight or military unit. These allowed for easy recognition on the battlefield and served as rallying points.

In religious art, particularly in medieval and Renaissance periods, banderoles were often depicted as flowing ribbons carrying biblical texts, prayers, or the names of saints. They served to convey specific messages or identify figures within a composition. Architects and heralds also employed banderoles in their designs, incorporating them into stonework, metalwork, or as part of coats of arms.
