Ballastvannrensesystem are onboard systems designed to treat a ship's ballast water to remove or neutralize harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens before they can be discharged into new waters. Ballast water is taken on by ships to maintain stability and trim, but it can contain a diverse range of marine life, including bacteria, viruses, eggs, larvae, and small invertebrates. When this water is released in a different port or ecological region, these organisms can become invasive species, disrupting local ecosystems and causing significant economic damage.

Ballast water treatment systems employ various methods to achieve effective treatment. Common technologies include filtration, UV irradiation, deoxygenation, and electro-chemical treatment. Filtration physically removes larger organisms and particles. UV irradiation uses ultraviolet light to inactivate or kill microorganisms by damaging their DNA. Deoxygenation reduces the oxygen levels in the ballast water, which is lethal to many marine organisms. Electro-chemical treatment, such as ozonation or chlorination, uses chemical processes to kill or inactivate organisms.

International regulations, primarily driven by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) through the Ballast Water Management Convention, mandate that ships implement approved ballast water treatment systems. This convention aims to prevent the introduction of invasive aquatic species and protect marine biodiversity. Ships are required to have a ballast water management plan and to treat their ballast water in accordance with the convention's standards before discharging it. The implementation of these systems is a crucial measure for global marine environmental protection.
