It describes the practice of formulating learning problems as differentiable computations where a loss measures error and gradients flowing backward through the computation graph provide the parameter updates. The term highlights the commonality of methods that rely on the chain rule and automatic differentiation to propagate error signals from outputs to inputs.

Core ideas include constructing a differentiable model, choosing an appropriate loss, and applying gradient-based optimization such as stochastic gradient descent. Variants include backpropagation through time for recurrent architectures and truncated BPTT to limit memory, as well as gradient clipping and normalization to stabilize training. The concept also covers differentiable programming where complex systems are trained end-to-end.

Applications include training neural networks of various types, sequence models, differentiable simulators, and some meta-learning setups. Limitations include vanishing and exploding gradients, high memory costs, and dependence on differentiability of all components. Mitigations include activation design (ReLU, SELU), residual connections, normalization, regularization, and advanced optimizers.
