Backlitkalvot are translucent polymer films designed for illumination from behind, enabling printed images to glow in backlit signage and displays. The term is commonly used in Finnish signage and printing contexts to describe films used in lightboxes, storefront signs, and architectural signs. When lit from behind, backlitkalvot provide bright, even illumination and can improve legibility in bright environments.

Most backlitkalvot consist of a clear substrate such as PET or PVC, with a diffusion or scattering layer on the rear side to spread light evenly. The front surface is typically optimized for ink adhesion and print quality, using solvent, UV, or latex inks. Some variants include a reflective backing to enhance brightness and reduce light loss, and certain designs use microstructured diffusers to improve uniformity.

Manufacturing and finishing involve extrusion coating, lamination, and precision printing on large-format equipment. The films are selected based on cleavage resistance, heat stability, and compatibility with the chosen light source, whether edge-lit LEDs or direct-lit panels. Post-print finishing may include protective laminates or anti-scratch coatings.

Applications include retail and commercial signage, point-of-purchase displays, backlit panels in kiosks, and interior architectural installations. Key performance factors are brightness, color fidelity, diffusion quality, and long-term stability under continuous illumination. Limitations can include heat sensitivity, potential yellowing over time, and varying recyclability depending on material composition.
