Backhaullinkeissä, often referred to as backhaul links, are a crucial component of telecommunications networks, particularly in wireless and mobile communication systems. They are responsible for connecting the access network, which is the part of the network that directly serves end-user devices like smartphones, to the core network. The core network is the central part of the telecommunications infrastructure that handles switching, routing, and management of the entire network.

In essence, backhaul links carry traffic from the base stations or access points back to the core network, and also carry traffic from the core network out to the access points. Without efficient and high-capacity backhaul, the performance of the entire network would be severely limited, even if the access network itself is advanced. This is because the backhaul would become a bottleneck, unable to handle the volume of data generated by users connected to the access points.

Various technologies are employed for backhaul, including fiber optic cables, microwave links, and increasingly, millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless technologies. The choice of technology depends on factors such as distance, capacity requirements, cost, and the availability of infrastructure. Fiber optics offer the highest capacity and reliability but can be expensive to deploy. Microwave links are a more traditional and cost-effective solution for medium distances, while mmWave provides high-capacity wireless connectivity for shorter distances, often used to supplement fiber or in areas where fiber deployment is challenging. The evolution of mobile networks, such as 5G and future generations, places increasingly demanding requirements on backhaul capacity and latency.
