BaOmer

BaOmer, also known as Lag BaOmer, is a Jewish observance marking the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, the period between Passover and Shavuot. It falls on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. The day is not a full festival but is observed with distinct customs in many communities.

Traditionally, Lag BaOmer is associated with the end of a plague that, according to the Talmud, afflicted Rabbi Akiva’s students during the Omer period. The occasion is also linked to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a 2nd-century sage associated with the Zohar, whose teachings are honored on this day in various ways.

Customs center on bonfires, singing, and outdoor gatherings. In Israel, a major focal point is the pilgrimage to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in Meron, where large crowds gather and celebrations continue into the night. In many communities, the Omer restrictions on haircuts and other semi-mourning practices are relaxed on Lag BaOmer, and some people mark the day with weddings or other celebrations after the Omer period’s restrictions.

Observances also occur in Jewish communities around the world, including special prayers, Torah study, and communal meals. While Lag BaOmer is widely observed, practices vary among denominations and communities. The day is regarded as a festive interruption within the Omer count, emphasizing continuity of study, joy, and remembrance.
