BYD Company Limited, commonly known simply as BYD, is a Chinese multinational corporation with activities in automobiles, batteries, and renewable energy. The name BYD stands for Build Your Dreams. Based in Shenzhen, the company has grown into one of the world’s largest producers of electric vehicles and rechargeable batteries. In some contexts, the plural form BYDs is used informally to refer to its vehicles and storage products.

Founded in 1995 by Wang Chuanfu as a rechargeable-battery maker, BYD expanded into automobile manufacturing in the 2000s, establishing BYD Auto as its automotive division in 2003. It released its first mass-market car in 2005 and subsequently focused on electric and hybrid drivetrains, alongside energy-storage solutions.

The company operates in three main business areas: Automobile (passenger cars, commercial vehicles, electric and plug-in hybrid systems), Battery and Energy Storage (lithium-ion cells and installed storage), and Electronics (components and assembly for consumer devices). It emphasizes vertical integration, including in-house battery production and a homegrown vehicle-platform architecture.

BYD manufactures principally in China, with growing international sales and selected production facilities abroad. It has become a leading supplier of electric buses and passenger EVs in several markets and markets its products in Europe, the Americas, and other regions.

The company is publicly traded on the Hong Kong and Shenzhen stock exchanges (Hong Kong: 1211; Shenzhen: 002594) and is led by founder Wang Chuanfu along with a management team. It pursues growth through product diversification, technology development, and expansions across automotive and energy segments.
