BMSin

BMSin is an open interoperability framework designed to enable building management systems (BMS) to exchange data with external software platforms and services. It provides standardized interfaces, data models, and messaging mechanisms intended to reduce vendor lock-in and accelerate system integration across energy management, facility operations, and occupancy analytics.

BMSin specifies a core data model including entities such as Point (sensor/actuator), Device, Alarm, Event, and Observation, plus relationships between them. Communication is achieved through RESTful APIs and a publish/subscribe messaging layer (such as MQTT) with support for time-series data. The framework emphasizes security through mechanisms like OAuth 2.0, mutual TLS, and API gateways. It also supports adapters to connect legacy BMS and common industrial protocols (BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA) and provides a service registry for discovery and capability negotiation.

The concept emerged from a collaborative industry initiative aimed at reducing fragmentation in building automation. Draft specifications and reference implementations were circulated by a coalition of vendors, integrators, and researchers. Governance is described as open and multi-stakeholder, with periodic versioning and backward-compatibility guidelines. Adoption remains largely experimental, with pilots in commercial buildings, campuses, and research facilities.

Adoption of BMSin is intended to enable easier integration of analytics, energy-management services, and IoT applications while promoting competition among solution providers.
